Have you heard about Six Degrees of Separation? This theory refers to the idea that, if a person is one “step” away from each person he or she knows and two "steps" away from each person who is known by one of the people he or she knows, then everyone is no more than six "steps" away from each person on Earth.. Based on this theory, Social Networking Services (SNS) website was established. Facebook is a social networking website that has the largest number of registered users among college-focused sites. Xiaonei (www.xiaonei.com) is one of the facebook clones throughout the world.
Xiaonei is the first SNS website using the theory of Six Degrees of Separation in Chinese mainland, which is set up specifically for college students. The domain name “xiaonei” means “on the campus”. The founder of website is Wang Xing, Wang Huiwen, Lai Binqiang and Tang Yang, and so few college students from
After registration, users can paste their own pictures, write blog, send messages and so on. The site encourages users sign up with their real name and upload real photos. A real-name register can have more privileges such bigger picture space, the right to found groups, etc. This helps students to experience the joy of reality life through the Internet.
Nowadays, Xiaonei is very popular among college students. More than 80% of the students in my school have a xiaonei account. They meet their classmates in xiaonei, chat through the Instant Messaging (IM) software provided by xiaonei, discuss questions in xiaonei group and write comments on their favorite book or music. This is the most important function of xiaonei: to communicate. But communicating in xiaonei is different from traditional BBS or chat room. In the bbs or chat room, your speech will be inundated because there are too many speakers. Sometimes nobody cares you, or sometimes there are too many unrelated people saying meaningless word. But in xiaonei, you can easily find people who have common love with you. You can chose your favorite topic to talk about. You can show your favorite things to let the like-minded people find you. The most exciting ting is that you can have your own group in xiaonei. You have the power to decide who is going to join. You can kick out the annoying advertising publishers. What’s more, as xiaonei is a real-name community, you can easily organize activities. In xiaonei, you have more freedom.
Another major function of xiaonei is to express oneself. Many students regard xiaonei as their second home in the Internet. They beautify their own pages as dress up themselves, they change their profile picture everyday to view their new clothes, and they write their feelings under the portrait. Xiaonei allows you custom the code to landscape your homepage; you can edit the background music, add flash on your page or change the mouse pointer. You can edit your profile to show your hobbies, show your favorite music, movies, sports or computer games. That can show your ambition and your interest. Besides, you space for blog and photo album. You can update photographs that record the daily life at any times. You can write about what you experience and what you think every day, and wait for your friends to write comments. Some of my friends have stopped updating their blog --- they are all turning to xiaonei. Though blog is also social network service, students still prefer xiaonei. The spread of blog has limitations. Your friends may not want to click your link, and it is very troubling to click and click between your friends’ blogs. But in xiaonei, the newly updated pages of your friends will view in your homepage. That may draw your attention. You can even share your friends log if you like, or you can write a word blog just like in Twitter. In a word, student’s can express themselves more easily in xiaonei.
But there are still some problems. I think the most dangerous place is just is the most important place: most of people in xiaonei open their personal information. Almost all kinds of personal information can be found in Xiaonei: names, sex, school, class, quarters, hometown, previous schools, phone number, e-mail address, QQ, MSN, etc. Though xiaonei only allows registered users to browse personal information of other users, the personal information thieves can provide false registration information to sign in. So it is safer to set as “Only my friends can browse my personal information”. However, if xiaonei has its own problems, what you can do is only pray. Although unlikely, I have heard that a once famous alumni website is selling users’ personal information at a profit before its collapse. This is undoubtedly dangerous to everyone. This is why I don’t use my real personal information to sign in.
Also, the advertising issue can not be ignored. Although webmasters never stop efforts, there are still some people publishing advertisement in xiaonei groups or personal pages. This affects the user experience.
Another controversial area is that xiaonei is too much like facebook. Similar icon, similar interface, similar webpage buttons, and even the default profile pictures are the same! This attracted a lot of criticism in the
Although there are a variety of problems, the number of xiaonei users is still increasing. This shows that students are constantly looking for a better way to communicate and express themselves. To a certain extent, this reflects the current university students’ call for the authenticity of the Internet, and it also reflects the university students are more rational to the Internet.
